AMUSF Stage 2 – Intermediate Craft Certificate

Enhance your skills and tackle more complex projects with confidence at the School of Upholstery. The AMUSF Stage 2 course is designed for those who have completed Stage 1 or have previous upholstery experience. This course combines traditional and modern materials with appropriate techniques for making and repairing upholstery.

Through defined projects and hands-on workshop practice, you will learn core principles and practices of the sector with a clearly defined pathway. The course allows for creative freedom within assignments, including applying decorative effects and print. Our team of tutors and visiting experts will develop your craft knowledge, providing an inspiring learning experience.

Course Overview

The AMUSF Stage 2 qualification focuses on expanding your skill set and understanding of upholstery. This course introduces advanced techniques and more challenging projects, ensuring you develop a comprehensive knowledge base.

Upholstery Exercise Piece

• Independent sprung edge for a cushioned seat (traditional materials and methods, including fabric and front border)

Machine Sewing

• T-shaped cushion with piping and zips (sample)
• Tailoring, including the fitting of caps and collars (sample)

Fabric Design

• Digital fabric design (including guidance on how to use Adobe Photoshop)

Furniture Restoration and Finishing

• Restoring and prepping assessment chairs for upholstering

Stage 2 Assessment Projects

• Armless chair with traditionally upholstered seat and back (seat to be sprung with coil springs)
• Post-1950s Armchair upholstered using modern materials and methods
• Portfolio containing notes and details of work in progress (ungraded but required for assessment)
• History of Upholstered Furniture (written research project)

Learning Outcomes

By the end of Stage 2, you will have mastered advanced upholstery techniques suitable for a wide range of furniture styles, including expert fabric and material selection. You will be capable of independently completing intricate upholstery projects and will be well prepared for completing the final Diploma year.

Who Can Apply

Our AMUSF Stage 2 course is open to anyone with a background in upholstery. While completing Stage 1 is beneficial, it is not a mandatory requirement. We welcome applicants who have gained significant experience through practical work or other relevant training. 

This course is ideal for those who are confident in their foundational upholstery skills and are eager to advance their expertise in both traditional and modern techniques.
