AMUSF Stage 3 – Upholstery Diploma

The Stage 3 course is the highest level of AMUSF upholstery training, designed for those who have completed Stage 2 and seek to master both traditional and modern upholstery techniques. This course prepares you for a professional career in upholstery, offering advanced skills, historical knowledge, and business acumen. 

Additionally, professional upholsterers and highly proficient hobbyists can enroll in this course to earn a trade-approved diploma, further enhancing their expertise and credentials in the field.

Course Overview

During your upholstery diploma year, you will learn advanced techniques such as fitting caps and collars, scroll arms, stitched-up edges, deep buttoning, and fluting. The projects will incorporate both traditional and modern furniture styles, including complex pieces with curved and tailored designs.

Furniture Restoration and Finishing

• Restoring and prepping assessment chairs for upholstering

Stage 3 Assessment Projects

• Substantial Traditionally Upholstered Armchair showcasing intermediate techniques (should include at least two of the following elements: the fitting of fixed cap-on arm covers and back collars, scroll arms or stitched-up edges to arms, sprung arms, coil sprung seats, independent sprung edges, deep buttoning, fluting or iron framed chair).
• Modern Moulded Chair with a concave inside back incorporating tailored fitting and top stitching (i.e., Egg style).
• Portfolio containing notes and details of work in progress (ungraded but required for assessed projects)
• 20th Century Furniture Design (written research project)

Professional Skills

In addition to practical skills, we will help equip you with essential skills for succeeding in the upholstery industry. You’ll learn to estimate materials and labour costs accurately, which is crucial for managing project budgets and ensuring profitability.

Tutors will cover basic business essentials, including fire safety regulations and insurance, and answer any questions you may have on starting your own upholstery business (if this is your goal).
